Word Play Program 2008

Word Play 2008, the Brisbane Writers Festival program for young readers, writers and illustrators is launched!

Word Play is one of the most important initiatives that we, as a Festival, undertake. It has grown significantly over the past few years and is now an intrinsic part of our annual Festival. Either online or at the Festival site we cater for more than 10,000 students from Grades 6 12 and are one of Australia's most dynamic literary experiences. I am extremely proud of Word Play and what it offers to the community, and to young people in particular

Word Play program booklet and Booking Form has been distributed to all schools in South-East Queensland and is also available here. Enhancing the program this year we have partnered with the State Library of Queensland to present SlammED! - a youth specific poetry slam & slam workshop program.

The full program for the Brisbane Writers Festival will appear in The Weekend Australian and on our website on August 16. The line-up of writers, events and workshops is simply terrific. I am sure you will find many things to inspire, entertain and challenge you.

The Festival could not exist without the hard work and commitment of many people including our General Manager, Mark Collier-Vickers, Administrative Co-ordinators, Abigail Dennis and Charis Holt, and Volunteers Co-ordinator, Joanne Tindale. In the context of Word Play I would particularly like to applaud the efforts of Jane O'Hara, our Schools' Program Manager. I am sure you will agree that she has put together a program that is both captivating and inspiring.

I would also like to thank our donors, partners, government and corporate, whose continuing support enables the festival to present such a rich, diverse and relevant program to its community a heartfelt thank you to them.

- Michael Campbell, Festival Director

Comments from Word Play 2007:

In the various festivals I've attended throughout the world, I've never seen such a coordinated and professional effort to include schools in a festival.

- Michael Collins (Man Booker Prize shortlisted author - Ireland/ United States)

When one of our Year 7 students tells you it was the "greatest day of their lives," you realize the magnitude of the occasion. It was a terrific day with many of the writers providing inspirational insight into what it takes to write passionately. I am sure it will be a day to be remembered by all who attended.
